Swiss Water Bottles

The origin of water bottles

As we realised the importance of drinking liquids at a very early stage, the origin of water bottles goes back a long way. Filling containers with drinking water helped keep water fresh for longer and also meant it could be transported.

It is not possible to establish exactly when the water bottle was invented. Bottles made of clay, tin and other materials have been found in archaeological excavations in both Asia and Egypt. These containers weren’t just used for drinking water, but also stored oils or medicine as well.

The oldest find of a drinking bottle made of glass was back at the end of the Middle Ages even though the production of glass was already very well known at this point. This process was constantly improved during the 17th century, then industrialisation in the 18th century powered the mass production of glass bottles.

There are now innumerable variations of water bottles. They are made in a variety of materials, in classic, sporty or refined designs. These range from small bottles with a low holding capacity to medium-sized examples to large water bottles for those that drink a lot. 1 litre water bottles are particularly popular.

The increasing use of reusable water bottles is good for our environment. At SIGG, we produce water bottles out of recycled materials for even greater sustainability. We are particularly proud of our “Stella” model, which consists of 30% recycled materials. Use of a reusable water bottle is the ideal solution for everyone who wants to integrate more sustainability into everyday life and play a positive part in helping the environment.

Our materials

We use various materials so that we can produce a wide range of water bottles in all shapes and sizes to satisfy individual customer needs. All materials used are free of harmful substances: our range only has BPA-free water bottles.

Our aluminium water bottles have been classics for a long time. SIGG has produced quality aluminium goods since 1908. From the very start, our water bottles were designed to be able to transport a wide range of drinks without leaking. This was even confirmed by Stiftung Warentest, which found that the sturdy SIGG aluminium bottle was the best water bottle they tested as it was the only one that remained completely leak-proof. All over the world, SIGG bottles are now recognised as intelligent, reusable water bottles, thanks to their outstanding features. Our aluminium water bottles are reliable every day and aid all aspects of everyday life.

Following the success story of the original SIGG aluminium bottle, the company has expanded its product range to include high-quality bottles made of glass, Tritan and polypropylene, whilst still focusing on its core values of reusability and versatility.

Glass drinking bottles have a long tradition. They provide a pleasant drinking experience and are fully recyclable. This means far less new waste is produced. It is a food-safe and hygienic material as it does not absorb any odours, tastes or colours, whilst also being free of harmful substances. Glass drinking bottles also come in child-friendly versions as well as for adults.

Furthermore stainless steel water bottles in 18/80 stainless steel are proven alternatives. Stainless steel is recyclable and completely free of harmful substances. On top of that, it is robust and not prone to breakage, lightweight, neutral in terms of taste and smell, and dishwasher safe up to 90°C. Another advantage of stainless steel is that the drink is protected against light and does not go bad quickly.

Plastic drinking bottles made of polypropylene or Tritan are, contrary to many expectations and just like our other water bottles, free of harmful substances and can be recycled. Polypropylene is a rigid, durable material, making it eminently suitable for the production of water bottles. Water bottles from plastic materials are especially popular as they are available in many different versions with widely varying designs, are lightweight compared to other water bottles and are also cost-effective to produce.

Stay hydrated – the water bottle as a faithful companion

The purpose of your water bottle is just as varied as the materials used to make it. Whether it’s playing sport, in your leisure time, at work or at school, the body always has to be supplied with fluid. Also, the quantity we need every day should never be underestimated. The general rule is: at least one litre of fluid should be drunk for each 20 kilograms of body weight. This is even higher on hot days or during sporting activities. Those who are out and about regularly often find it difficult to cover what they need. Usually, it’s possible to buy something to drink when on the go. However, it is far more practical, cost-effective and also environmentally friendly to bring your own drink from home with your own water bottle.

To find the right water bottle for you, you should ask yourself the question of what requirements should the water bottle satisfy when out and about. For active people who move a lot, weight is important. When hiking, a heavy water bottle can quickly become a burden. If the corresponding quantity of fluid is also added to it, the bottle is that much heavier and hiking may be less enjoyable as a result. Furthermore, the sport water bottle should also be robust. It is very possible that the bottle may fall during sporting activity. For cyclists, bike water bottles that can be easily opened with one hand or with the mouth - even when on the move - are particularly suitable. Size also plays a role. A smaller, more handy bike water bottle is enough for those who occasionally take the bike for a brief spin when the weather is pleasant. However, those who prefer a longer ride will be better served with a bigger bottle. .

The question of temperature resistance can also be another key factor. Those who feel the need for a cold, refreshing drink in summer will appreciate a water bottle with the necessary insulation. This ensures that you always have a refreshingly cool drink to hand even after spending hours in warmer temperatures. Conversely, it is important for tea and coffee lovers that their drink stays warm for a long time even when the weather is cold. It is likely that the water bottle is shaken up pretty hard when out and about. With carbonated drinks, this usually means that the carbonic acid is lost. This is an annoyance, and it also doesn’t taste as good. Those who like carbonated drinks such as mineral water, apple spritzer or lemonade are best served with our water bottles for carbonated drinks water bottles for carbonated drinks. These bottles ensure that the carbonic acid stays in the drink for a long time, ensuring it still has a fresh taste after hours - without any leakage. By the way: all our water bottles are leak-proof. After all, what could be more annoying than a wet bag or rucksack? Whether glass, stainless steel or plastic - SIGG water bottles are tightly sealed. That is also important for kids as a wet schoolbag is not unheard of during a hectic day at school. SIGG water bottles are available in various sizes with colourful, friendly motifs. Our Disney water bottles are particularly popular. They include characters such as Mickey Mouse, Donald Duck and other favourites from popular Disney films such as Cars or Frozen. An attractive, child-friendly water bottle helps ensure that children drink enough fluids and are therefore playfully encouraged to live a healthy lifestyle at an early age.

Even more diversity from SIGG: coffee cups to go and lunch boxes

Greater variety and sustainability can be found with our reusable coffee cups to go for coffee drinkers and lunch boxes for everyone who doesn’t just want to stay “hydrated”, but also want snacks or a meal for sustenance.

The double-walled coffee cups are available - just like our thermo flasks - in various materials and trendy colours. Available in a range of sizes, these travel mugs are ideal for those who don't have time for a leisurely coffee, or those who like to drink their coffee when they’re on the go.

We have already mentioned how important it is to be adequately hydrated. However, it is equally important to eat healthily. A lunch box is an ideal way of ensuring that freshly prepared food can be taken with you so there’s no need for unhealthy fast food. We have developed two different models so that a simple sandwich can be stored just as easily as a fresh salad or a hearty stew: The simple lunch box made of aluminium and the Thermo food container made of stainless steel. As you’d expect, they are available in your preferred colour and size. In other words, you’re fully covered.
